What is the difference between wheel alignment and tire balancing?
Wheel alignment and tire balancing correct different conditions. Alignment measures and adjusts wheel angles against the vehicle manufacturer's specifications. Balancing corrects uneven mass in each tire-and-wheel assembly so it rotates smoothly. Consistent pulling, an off-centre steering wheel, or edge wear points toward an alignment check. Speed-related vibration can point toward balance, but symptoms overlap. A qualified technician should inspect the tires, wheels, steering, and suspension before prescribing either service.
Neither service is a general cure for every vibration or handling complaint. The useful question is not which label sounds closer. It is which measurements explain the observed condition without overlooking tire damage or a mechanical fault.
What does a wheel alignment change?
An alignment compares wheel geometry with the specifications for the exact vehicle and adjusts the points the manufacturer makes adjustable. Michelin defines alignment as adjusting wheel angles to the manufacturer's specifications. Those angles govern how the tires meet the road and how the vehicle responds while travelling straight, cornering, and braking.
The common measurement terms are:
- Toe: whether the fronts of paired wheels point slightly toward or away from each other when viewed from above.
- Camber: the inward or outward tilt of a wheel when viewed from the front.
- Caster: the fore-and-aft angle of the steering axis when viewed from the side.
The correct values are vehicle-specific. A printout should therefore show measured values, the applicable specification ranges, and the before-and-after state. A generic claim that every wheel must be visually vertical or point perfectly straight is not a substitute for those data.
Alignment equipment does not add weight to a wheel. It also does not repair a bent wheel, damaged tire, worn joint, or distorted suspension component. If a measurement cannot be brought into specification, the technician should identify the reason rather than repeatedly adjusting around it.
What does tire balancing change?
Balancing concerns the distribution of mass around one mounted tire-and-wheel assembly. The assembly is placed on balancing equipment, rotated, measured, and corrected at indicated locations with suitable wheel weights. The work aims to reduce the rotating imbalance that can produce shake or vibration.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says balancing ensures wheels rotate properly without causing the vehicle to shake or vibrate. It also says new tires should be balanced when installed. Michelin separately advises balancing when tires are first mounted or remounted after repair.
Balancing does not alter toe, camber, or caster. A correctly balanced assembly can still run at the wrong angle. Conversely, an aligned vehicle can still vibrate because an assembly is imbalanced or because another tire, wheel, hub, steering, or suspension condition needs inspection.

Michelin lists pulling, an off-centre steering wheel, and rapid inner- or outer-edge wear as alignment signs. Its vibration guidance says imbalance can cause vibration, but also directs further alignment and suspension checks if rebalancing does not remove it.
A brief sensation on one road is weak evidence. Record when the symptom occurs, whether it changes with speed, where it is felt, when it began, and whether it followed a tire service or an impact. Do not conduct abrupt steering, braking, or high-speed experiments to reproduce it.
What should you check before requesting either service?
Start with conditions that can distort the comparison or require a different response.
- Read the vehicle manual. Note the specified tire sizes, cold inflation pressures, rotation restrictions, and maintenance instructions.

- Inspect from a safe position. Look for cuts, cracks, bulges, exposed material, embedded objects, damaged rims, missing fasteners, and visibly abnormal wear. Do not crawl under a vehicle supported only by a jack.

- Record recent events. Include pothole or curb impacts, tire replacement or repair, wheel changes, suspension or steering work, and the point at which the symptom started.
NHTSA recommends monthly checks of inflation, tread wear, and damage. It also tells drivers to consult a tire service professional for performance problems such as noise or vibration. A bulge, cut, rapid air loss, exposed structure, severe vibration, or sudden handling change needs prompt professional assessment rather than a routine booking chosen from a symptoms chart.
When does an alignment check make sense?
Request measured alignment when the vehicle persistently pulls on a straight, level road, the steering wheel remains off-centre, tread wear is uneven across a tire, or handling changed after a substantial impact or steering/suspension work. New tires are also a sensible point to review existing wear and decide whether a measurement is warranted.
Ask the shop to distinguish a check from an adjustment. A measurement can show that angles are within specification, in which case an adjustment may not be necessary. If adjustment is performed, request the before-and-after report and an explanation of any value left outside range.
Do not ask a technician to align around a damaged tire, bent component, loose joint, or other unresolved defect. Geometry can only be evaluated meaningfully when the supporting parts and tire-and-wheel assemblies are fit for measurement.
When does balancing make sense?
Balancing is normally part of installing a new tire on a wheel and of remounting a tire after an eligible repair. It also belongs in the diagnostic path when a new speed-related vibration appears, a wheel weight is missing, or a tire-and-wheel assembly has been removed and remounted.
Ask whether the shop checked:
- tire and wheel condition before balancing;
- correct mounting and centring;
- the measured imbalance for each assembly;
- whether an unusual amount of corrective weight was required; and
- whether vibration remained after the assemblies were balanced and road tested safely.
A machine producing a balance result does not prove that the tire and wheel are structurally sound. If vibration continues, Michelin advises checking alignment and suspension components. The next step is broader diagnosis, not automatically adding more weight.
Do you ever need alignment and balancing together?
Yes, because the conditions can coexist and the services answer separate measurements. A vehicle may arrive with edge wear caused by geometry and vibration caused by a tire-and-wheel assembly. It may also have symptoms that initially resemble both but come from a different tire, wheel, steering, or suspension problem.
The clean sequence is:
- document the complaint and recent service or impacts;
- inspect tire condition, sizes, pressures, wheels, and relevant mechanical parts;
- measure balance and alignment where the evidence supports those checks;
- correct only verified conditions under the vehicle and equipment procedures; and
- confirm the result without unsafe road testing.
Do not approve a package merely because both services are commonly sold together. Ask which observation or measurement supports each line item. Equally, do not reject one service solely because another was just completed: balancing cannot correct wheel angles, and alignment cannot redistribute assembly mass.
What should appear on the work order?
A useful estimate or completed order identifies the complaint, inspection findings, measurements, work performed, and unresolved conditions. For alignment, request the applicable specification and before-and-after values. For balancing, request confirmation that each serviced assembly was checked and corrected and that tire and wheel condition was assessed.
Also record:
- vehicle mileage and date;
- tire size and position;
- cold pressures or the conditions under which they were checked;
- tread measurements and wear locations;
- relevant impacts, repairs, rotations, or replacements;
- any recommended steering or suspension diagnosis; and
- the result of the shop's controlled verification.
Add the record to the monthly safety-check file. That history helps distinguish a one-time correction from a recurring condition and gives the next technician evidence instead of a vague statement that the vehicle was “aligned recently.”
Which service should you choose?
Choose from measurements, not from a single symptom. Pulling, an off-centre wheel, and edge wear justify an alignment and mechanical inspection. Speed-related vibration justifies a tire, wheel, balance, and mechanical inspection. Visible damage, rapid pressure loss, severe vibration, or a sudden handling change requires prompt professional assessment.
